Update: Train derailment reported near Fayette Mall & Shillito Park



Employees and patrons of Fayette Mall have been evacuated from the area as cleanup continues at the site of a train derailment. The mall remains closed until further notice.

The train derailment is a separate incident and unrelated to the declared emergency in Madison County involving chemical agents.
 Previously released 11:00 A fire that erupted from the train derailment near Fayette Mall has been contained; public access to the area remains restricted. Environmental clean-up contractors are in route to the scene. Clean up is expected to take several hours.



The derailment occurred on the train tracks that run between Shillito Park and Fayette Mall. Fayette Mall and its entire parking lot remain closed, as well as Shillito Park. Please see the attached map for additional affected areas.

Smoke from the derailment is blowing east toward Nicholasville Road. Citizens are asked to avoid the area and stay indoors. Several road closures are in place.

Update: Jacobson Park Reception Center Now Open



Jacobson Park is now receiving people from the accident at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Madison County involving chemical agents. Several dozen people and some animals have been treated at the scene. Patients with significant injuries are being transported to local hospitals.

Citizens are reminded to avoid the Richmond Road and Athens-Boonesboro corridor if possible.

A shelter for people affected by the emergency is located at Centenary United Methodist church at 2800 Tates Creek Road. Citizens can call the Madison County Joint Information Center for information at (859) 624-4756.
 Previously released at 10:35 - The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) Divisions of Emergency Management, Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Human Services and The Salvation Army, The American Red Cross and other community agencies have completed setting up a reception area at Jacobson Park (4001 Athens-Boonesboro Road) for persons relocating from Madison County.



Jacobson Park is closed to the general public. No protective actions need to be taken by those persons living or working in Fayette County.

This reception center operation follows the declaration of a community emergency in Madison County due to an accident at Bluegrass Army Depot in Richmond, KY involving chemical agents. This accident occurred at approximately 9:00 a.m. This activity is fully staffed with emergency, law enforcement and aid personnel. On-call first responders and volunteers should not come to Jacobson Park at this time. If this status changes additional notifications will be sent out.

Anyone living or working in the Jacobson Park area and people along the Richmond Road/Athens-Boonesboro Road corridor should expect a significant traffic impact for the next several hours. Residents are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.

Lexington fire personnel have “contained” the fires that resulted from a train derailment between Fayette Mall and Shillito Park.

The train, carrying hazardous materials, derailed Wednesday morning. The derailment prompted officials to evacuate a 500-foot area around the scene, which includes Fayette Mall and Shillito Park.

People are being told to avoid the area until further notice.

Fire and Police personnel are on the scene and have moved into the recovery and cleanup phase.

Lexington Emergency Operations Center Activated

After Blue Grass Army Depot Accident

 

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been activated.  There has been an accident at the Blue Grass Army Depot involving chemical agents.

At this time, no protective actions are required of persons currently working or living in Fayette County.  Due to the developing nature of the accident, residents are asked to limit outdoor activities and monitor local media outlets for updates on potential protective actions that may be necessary. Be aware of increased public safety vehicle traffic in the area of Jacobson Park.
