Update: Train derailment reported near Fayette Mall & Shillito Park
Employees and patrons of Fayette Mall have been evacuated from the area as cleanup continues at the site of a train derailment. The mall remains closed until further notice.
The train derailment is a separate incident and unrelated to the declared emergency in Madison County involving chemical agents.
Previously released 11:00 A fire that erupted from the train derailment near Fayette Mall has been contained; public access to the area remains restricted. Environmental clean-up contractors are in route to the scene. Clean up is expected to take several hours.
The derailment occurred on the train tracks that run between Shillito Park and Fayette Mall. Fayette Mall and its entire parking lot remain closed, as well as Shillito Park. Please see the attached map for additional affected areas.
Previously released at 10:15: A train derailment has been reported near Fayette Mall and Shillito Park. Areas within 500 feet of the derailment site have been evacuated.
Smoke from the derailment is blowing east toward Nicholasville Road. Citizens are asked to avoid the area and stay indoors. Several road closures are in place.
Updates will be issued when more information is available. Additional details on the nature of the incident and a preliminary impact assessment will be provided to the media and the public as soon as they are available and confirmed.
